Taekwon-Do is a modern art of self defence developed in 1955 in Korea. The father and founder of Taekwon-Do, General Choi Hong Hi, researched other martial arts and used principals of modern science to design techniques which have maximum power and effectiveness. Taekwon-Do has grown in popularity and today is taught in nearly every country in the world. It is greatly renowned for its spectacular and dynamic kicking techniques. However there are over 3000 techniques using both legs and arms and also includes basic grappling and throwing moves. The range of techniques caters for all types of situations, including defending against more than one opponent and against weapons.

Who can learn Taekwon-Do

Taekwon-Do is for anyone wishing to learn it, no matter what age you are. You can benefit from Taekwon-Do if you are male or female, young or old, whatever your build or fitness level.

ITF Taekwon-Do is a very effective, practical and complete system of self defence. Due to the nature of training a person will develop the ability to perform fast and powerful movements. Your reaction speed and awareness will be heightened. You will vastly improve your confidence in any given defence situation. This in itself will make it less likely that a possible assailant will choose you as a target.

The techniques you learn and practice will enable you to deal with any situation and you will learn to defend against more than one opponent and against those with knives or sticks.

The power that a Taekwon-Do practitioner develops means even those of a very light build, such as a child or woman, will be devastating to any attacker. Even the blocks, due to their power, that are learnt in Taekwon-Do can be used to disable an opponent without even having to strike the opponent back.

There are also a number of effective and simple release techniques to escape from any hold and contry to martial art myth there are many techniques learnt in Taekwon-Do to be used when only inches from your attacker.

At Brighton & Hove Taekwon-Do School you will learn all aspects of the art. You will have the opportunity to train up through the grading syllabus and one day will achieve the accolade of Black Belt.

Along the way you will have the chance to enter and compete in various national and international competitions. These are open to all ages but competition is only a tiny aspect of Taekwon-Do and although encouraged to compete it is purely optional. It is more important to enjoy the training and to work hard to develop the movements and techniques as you progressively develop within the art.
